“I’d Try Pilates, But…” — The Most Common Reasons People Don’t Start (And Why You Might Be Surprised)

“I’ve always wanted to try Pilates, but…”

If you’ve ever finished that sentence, you’re not alone. Almost everyone who walks into their first class has had at least one reason to hesitate.

The truth is, starting something new can feel intimidating. But many of the concerns people have about Pilates disappear after that very first session.

Let’s talk about the most common “buts.”

“But I’m too out of shape.”

This is probably the number one reason people avoid Pilates.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to be “in shape” to begin. It’s about meeting your body where it is today. Exercises can be modified for beginners, and progress happens at your own pace. Every experienced Pilates client started as a beginner.

“But I’m not flexible.”

Pilates isn’t about already being flexible.

It’s designed to improve mobility, strength, and body awareness over time. Flexibility is something you gain—not something you need before you start.

“But I’m too old.”

Movement has no age limit.

Whether you’re in your 30s, 50s, 70s, or beyond, Pilates can help improve balance, posture, core strength, and confidence in everyday movement. Sessions are tailored to your individual needs and abilities.

“But I have back pain.”

Many people discover Pilates because they’re looking for relief from back pain.

When taught appropriately, Pilates focuses on core stability, alignment, and controlled movement that can support a healthier spine. If you’re dealing with an injury or persistent pain, it’s always important to discuss it with your healthcare provider and let your instructor know before class.

“But I don’t think I’m coordinated.”

You don’t have to know the movements before you arrive.

Your instructor is there to guide you through each exercise, one step at a time. Coordination improves with practice, and everyone learns at their own pace.

“But everyone else will know what they’re doing.”

This fear is more common than you think.

The reality? Most people are focused on their own workout—not watching yours. Pilates studios are often some of the most welcoming spaces because everyone remembers what it felt like to be new.

“But I don’t have time.”

You don’t need hours each week to experience the benefits.

Even one or two sessions a week can help you build strength, improve posture, reduce tension, and feel more connected to your body. Consistency matters more than perfection.

“But Pilates isn’t for someone like me.”

Pilates isn’t reserved for dancers, athletes, or people who already love fitness.

It’s for busy parents, retirees, office workers, runners, people recovering from injuries, and anyone who wants to move better and feel stronger. Pilates meets you exactly where you are.

What If You Changed One Word?

Instead of saying:

“I’d love to try Pilates, but…”

Try saying:

“I’d love to try Pilates, and…”

That one small change shifts your mindset.

“But” ends the conversation. It gives your brain a reason to stop.

“And” leaves room for possibility.

  • “I’d love to try Pilates, and I’m a little nervous.”

  • “I’d love to try Pilates, and I’m not very flexible.”

  • “I’d love to try Pilates, and I’ve never done anything like it before.”

Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn’t flexibility, fitness, or time.

It’s simply taking that first step.
